In 1969, backing the arts in New Plymouth was enough to get you spat on in the street. Then-president of the Operatic Society, John Murphy, copped some ill-directed spray while fighting to save the Opera House from demolition. Thankfully, it wasn't curtains after all, with Murphy's efforts helping ensure the Showplace lived on and continues to host world-class productions to this day. This West Coast IPA celebrates 100 years of the New Plymouth Operatic Society with a proper ensemble of old-school and modern hops. Pine, citrus and tropical resin take centre stage atop a lean malt base, creating a brew that hits like a standing ovation on closing night.

Despite the name, 'German Hill' isn't particularly German at all. It earned its title from the blunt local assumption that any European accent must surely be German - when rather it was Inglewood's influx of Polish immigrants settling there in the area in the late 1800s. Close enough, right? Nestled just outside of Inglewood, the volcanic mound originally known as Atoa Iwa had previously served as a perfect kainga for local iwi, giving commanding views of the surrounding land. It also boasted several clean, bubbling springs of water known for its excellent mineral composition. Raise a stein and give a mighty Prost to this beer, brewed with traditional German malt and hops, with inspiration taken from the pure, fresh springs of German Hill.

Inspired by the legendary "Mad" Max Suter-Mckay of Manaia, this Hazy IPA celebrates a local character known for his love of quirky Citroëns and unconventional salesmanship. Swapping Citroën for citrus, Shining Peak Brewing showcases Manilita, a new experimental hop from Freestyle, delivering bright, vibrant hop character in a soft and juicy hazy IPA. Bursting with fresh citrus notes and backed by a smooth, pillowy body, Mad Max is a fitting tribute to a man who always did things a little differently.

The bustling community known as Tarata is home to less than six hundred people, but close to a couple of hundred thousand sheep. Known for its winding roads, wool-shed parties and red-band tan-lines, Tarata is now home to Wayward Hops - a burgeoning Hop Farm established by Tim and Maggie Verry, under the wise tutelage of Kevin Murphy in 2022. Oapui Road Pilsner is a crisp brew, fermented cold, and liberally hopped with freshly picked Riwaka cones grown in the heart of Taranaki's back-country.

Port Taranaki's own salty puss - 'Colin's' the cat shot to fame in 2001 when a free feed saw her accidentally stow away on the methanol tanker 'Tomiwaka' - bound for Korea. The chatty tortoiseshell snoozed her way out of the country and into national headlines, sparking daily updates, TV appearances, and an international rescue mission. A true local legend, she lived out her days at the tanker terminal. This salted Raspberry Gose tips a hat to Colin's the Cat - the original Saline Feline.

Work smarter, not harder - an idiom that Lou Butler Sr fixated on as he sat, drawing machinery designs with chalk on his workshop floor. The Inglewood man would go on to invent a machine that would take sword to said thorny bush. Dealing to hedges that were sometimes 20 metres wide, the Butler Bros trimmer wielded a 3.5m blade and a steel cage to protect the operator from flying debris, and was mounted on Bren-Gun Carriers, Tanks and Army Trucks, no doubt raising eyebrows from their Windsor Road Neighbours. This Lactose infused Sour Beer uses truck loads of Blackberries and a dash of lemon.
