Despite the name, 'German Hill' isn't particularly German at all. It earned its title from the blunt local assumption that any European accent must surely be German - when rather it was Inglewood's influx of Polish immigrants settling there in the area in the late 1800s. Close enough, right? Nestled just outside of Inglewood, the volcanic mound originally known as Atoa Iwa had previously served as a perfect kainga for local iwi, giving commanding views of the surrounding land. It also boasted several clean, bubbling springs of water known for its excellent mineral composition. Raise a stein and give a mighty Prost to this beer, brewed with traditional German malt and hops, with inspiration taken from the pure, fresh springs of German Hill.

The bustling community known as Tarata is home to less than six hundred people, but close to a couple of hundred thousand sheep. Known for its winding roads, wool-shed parties and red-band tan-lines, Tarata is now home to Wayward Hops - a burgeoning Hop Farm established by Tim and Maggie Verry, under the wise tutelage of Kevin Murphy in 2022. Port Taranaki's own salty puss - 'Colin's' the cat shot to fame in 2001 when a free feed saw her accidentally stow away on the methanol tanker 'Tomiwaka' - bound for Korea. The chatty tortoiseshell snoozed her way out of the country and into national headlines, sparking daily updates, TV appearances, and an international rescue mission. Before Jandals were a Kiwi birthright, they were just a good idea based on the traditional Japanese Sandal. John Cowie of Taranaki saw potential where others didn't and began making a plastic version of the jandal in the 1940s. Unfortunately, Cowie's innovative spirit didn't translate into the savviest of business chops - the trademark and patent later being secured by a slippery entrepreneur from Auckland who introduced a rubber version of the flip flop. This Hazy IPA celebrates the kiwi innovative spirit - collaborating with Hapi Hop Research trialling different techniques of hop additions and how they diversify flavour. Work smarter, not harder - an idiom that Lou Butler Sr fixated on as he sat, drawing machinery designs with chalk on his workshop floor. The Inglewood man would go on to invent a machine that would take sword to said thorny bush. Dealing to hedges that were sometimes 20 metres wide, the Butler Bros trimmer wielded a 3.5m blade and a steel cage to protect the operator from flying debris, and was mounted on Bren-Gun Carriers, Tanks and Army Trucks, no doubt raising eyebrows from their Windsor Road Neighbours.
