Despite the name, 'German Hill' isn't particularly German at all. It earned its title from the blunt local assumption that any European accent must surely be German - when rather it was Inglewood's influx of Polish immigrants settling there in the area in the late 1800s. Close enough, right? Nestled just outside of Inglewood, the volcanic mound originally known as Atoa Iwa had previously served as a perfect kainga for local iwi, giving commanding views of the surrounding land. The Inglewood man would go on to invent a machine that would take sword to said thorny bush. Dealing to hedges that were sometimes 20 metres wide, the Butler Bros trimmer wielded a 3.5m blade and a steel cage to protect the operator from flying debris, and was mounted on Bren-Gun Carriers, Tanks and Army Trucks, no doubt raising eyebrows from their Windsor Road Neighbours.
